When you have a pain in the back of your head, and you have not recently banged or bumped the area, then the most likely cause is a headache or migraine. These can be caused by the muscles on back of head pain and get tensed up. What causes these muscles to do that?
When muscles at back of head pain and tense up, it can be caused by stress. If you are experiencing this type of pain, think if you have recently been overstressed at work or at home. This might be the reason for your pain.
Another possible cause is that the muscles have been strained somehow. Whiplash can often cause this effect, or even sleeping on that area of the neck in a way that caused the muscles to tense up.
